Most people do not have a good understanding about health.  I include my former self in that statement and admit that it took me quite a long time and many bouts with sickness before I learned how to eat right.  It has not been emphasized enough in our education system to leave any lasting impression on young people as they embark on their own into self-sufficient living.  Even the parents that are raising them probably don’t know enough about good eating habits to make informed decisions when food shopping and preparing the meals for their family.  These days many people eat fast-food out or buy prepared/packaged meals that deprive them of whole foods and nutrition.  Larger portions and eating a great amount of unhealthy foods like cookies and ice cream is destroying our society’s well-being. It tastes so good I know, but it is basically empty calories that deprive your body of the nourishment it needs.  Sugar has a multitude of negative effects on the body.

Enough about our bad eating habits we’ve grown so accustomed to, I’ll get right into the health challenges we create when we let the fast food establishments and the standard american diet (S.A.D.) dictate our nourishment requirements.  Due to an imbalance in our daily meals of too much meat, dairy, wheat and sugar, we are now one of the unhealthiest countries in the world with the most obesity, diabetes and heart disease.  Our bodies don’t stand a chance if we continue to eat foods that aren’t good for us.  Therefore we need to find a solution.  The Essenes, a religious group from the time of Jesus, stated the importance of detoxing the body and adopting a healthy lifestyle in order to be whole in mind, body & spirit.  One way to do this is by not eating before bed and giving your organs a chance to rest.  Also decreasing the amount we eat, never satiate yourself, it is good to stop eating at 80% fullness.

Most people’s bodies are overrun with unfriendly bacteria called Candida due to taking antibiotics combined with a stressful, sedentary unhealthy lifestyle.  While lacking live foods due to overcooking.  Once the body is compromised by an overgrowth of this fungus the internal organs begin to clog up and lose there ability to function properly.  We have discovered a solution to this problem and are excited to teach others how to be free of this epidemic–which wreaks havoc on your health, by lowering your energy level and libido and can cause many other emotional and physical illnesses.  Some examples are depression, moodiness, hormonal imbalances, thyroid disease, skin problems like eczema and acne.

It is essential to have a body that is alkaline in order to be free of diseases like cancer.  Scientists have discovered that cancer cannot grow in an alkaline environment.  You can use test strips to determine your ph level–if it turns blue/green  you are alkaline/healthy or if it stays yellow you are acidic/unhealthy.   For years my strip stayed yellow, Type A blood types like myself have a high acid level in their digestive system which requires a lot of alkaline foods (green leafy vegetables) in their diet, they also need to keep their stress levels very low.  My spiritual practice of yoga and meditation relaxes me and is something we like to teach at our center.  Another way I keep my body alkaline is through diet, by eliminating sugar and drinking lemon in water and kefir (probiotic) which we teach people how to make without sugar and is part of the The Body Ecology Diet by Donna Gates.  We have many wonderful recipes to share.  It doesn’t have to cost a fortune to eat healthy.  It’s affordable, easy-to-do and you don’t have to feel deprived on this new way of eating, there are many alternative ingredients that make the food taste great.  Xylitol is a natural sugar substitute that comes from birch trees and it’s not only sweet it is anti fungal and good for your teeth.  There are many other types of flours to replace wheat (a gluten allergy which affects many, weakens the immune system, and can cause many health issues).

Dr. Wayne Dyer in the movie “The Shift,” starts his day by saying. “Thank you, thank you, thank you.”  The idea of appreciating life and starting our day with gratitude for simply being alive.  What a great concept!  It sure beats the way I was raised, my parents had this anxious quality about them and a feeling of dread permeated the house in the mornings.  There’s a lot of good to be said for living a responsible life, but when duty turns into drudgery, that’s when you either have to reinvent your life or improve your attitude.  I wish my parents knew this.  However, Nietzsche said, “That which does not kill us makes us stronger.”

Gratitude’s been a hard pill for me to swallow based on some of my bizarre and frightening life experiences since childhood.  It’s been like a Sci-Fi Thriller and involves abduction, aliens and DNA harvesting.  The catch is that it doesn’t happen in my normal everyday life, but in the middle of the night when I’m in bed asleep, so it feels like a nightmare instead of reality.  Thankfully, they screen my mind (erase memory) so I don’t remember too much of the scary details.  Thank goodness it doesn’t happen every night!  As you can imagine there have been some side effects, one being PTS (Post Traumatic Stress) and panic attacks which have lessened with maturity and learning to relax and trust that there is a bigger picture and if this is karma, I’m grateful to be clearing it.  Plus, these terrifying experiences have made me stronger, less fearful as I face each one, given me wisdom, compassion and understanding which enables me to help others facing similar circumstances — life can be stranger than fiction.  Don’t worry it’s not contagious (as far as I know), I was born into it.  I deal with it but it’s hard to be thankful for it while it’s happening.  That’s for sure.

Another gratitude obstacle to overcome would be that I was born in the month of January which makes me the Earth sign, Capricorn, as an astrologer I know that I’m here to learn how to be grateful.  All the earth signs are.  Taurus (May birthdays) and Virgo (September) also are learning the same lesson.  To be thankful even amidst chaos and any unfortunate happenings as well as to appreciate the good stuff more.  One way to develop this virtue can be as simple as writing a daily gratitude journal.  I remember Oprah having a show about gratitude back in the 90’s and suggested keeping a gratitude journal.  I did this and there were some days I couldn’t complete the daily requirements of listing ten things I was thankful for.  It was during a time of extreme challenges and struggles after a divorce and trying to raise three young children on my own.  (I’m not complaining I know we all face upsets in life, I’m just sharing mine in hopes to help and inspire others.  Humans have amazing ability to overcome vast adversity, and that’s what I strive for everyday of my life.)  Finding atleast 1 thing is a good way to start, it could be the sunshine or a hot shower, then expand to a delicious meal and the company of good friends, a warm embrace.  Once you start looking at life this way it becomes easy to find a multitude of things to be happy about throughout your day.  It even becomes possible to see the gift in everything and everyone.  Some have even said they’re thankful for cancer or some major illness because of how it changed them for the better.

Life is meant to be cherished.  What stops us from seeing the value in our everyday lives?  We were conditioned and programmed to worry and fret about the future.  Bombarded by commercials trying to convince you that you will get sick, in order to sell more prescription drugs and insurance companies trying to sell you protection from life’s mishaps.  It’s all fear based and I decided to turn away from this kind of lifestyle.  I have been living my life radically different for the past 5 years and it makes some people very nervous, like my conservative father, that I don’t have medical insurance or a retirement account anymore.  I’ve decided that it’s unnecessary to focus my attention on creating a false sense of security.  It’s better to trust that life will support me as I live from my heart.  This has given me a new found freedom.  An excitement about what’s possible.  I’ve broken out of the proverbial box and I’m exploring my options.  So far I’m doing just fine, I eat healthy organic food, take herbs and homeopathy for whatever ailes me therefore I don’t need to go to doctor’s.  I recently found out that a doctor discovered that water cures all sickness, he said people aren’t sick, they’re just thirsty…..dehydration.  Now that is cheap medicine.  Basically drink about 8-10 glasses of pure water per day and you’ll be healthy.  As far as my finances, I own my house and vehicle and have a small nest egg.  I decided right before the 2008 market crash that it was time to scale down, I sold my big house and got rid of all my debt.  It really is possible to make these kinds of changes, get rid of mortgages and live a simple, modest life with contentment.  I am proof of that.

It’s hard to feel thankful when you are stuck in a mindset that says I don’t have enough, or there’s not enough to go around.  This mentality is bound to get you caught up in fear and greed.  I heard a wise teacher once say that love and fear cannot be felt at the same time.  I think the same goes for gratitude and lack.  When we compare our situation to someone like a Donald Trump or some other super rich person, it’s hard to feel good about your own life.  So don’t compare!  After all, they may not even be happy.  I used to have a lot of money and it can be all consuming, buying unnecessary things and then taking care of them.  My mother used to say, a smaller house means less to clean and I agree. Be thankful for whatever you have because if you’re reading this article you must have something.  Eyes to see, a healthy brain and intellect to understand the words, a moment to kick back and read the paper, ect.  Focus on the basics, that’s what I do.

One way to show gratitude is to Mother Earth, we are physically made up of all her elements.  We probably rarely if ever attribute our life to her.  In reality we are breathing her air, drinking her water and eating her food — the planet sustains our bodies along with the Sun.  A big thank you is in order and we can extend it by saying a prayer of thanks before a meal as well as other times in our day.  I like to take a walk when the sun is setting and say goodnight and thanks to Father Sun.  We can also be thankful to our parents for having us and for all the people who have helped us in our life.  There really is so much to be thankful for.  We can be grateful the stress of the holidays is over and for the love shared with others.  Make a New Year’s resolution to be more grateful.

Oftentimes, I like to point out the health benefits of the qualities I speak about in my Life Lesson articles.  Gratitude has been found to make you a happier person.  Dr. Emmons who wrote the book, “Thanks!: How the New Science of Gratitude Can Make You Happier” found that practicing gratitude can increase happiness levels by around 25%.  His research based on ten years of studies, shows that those who practice gratitude are more creative, more resilient, have a stronger immune system, and better social relationships than those who don’t practice gratitude.  He’s not saying that their lives are easier, just their attitude is better.  I really value health and I find this information to be a great motivator for me.

A few words to describe happiness would be contentment, satisfaction, and enjoyment.  It has been recognized as a virtuous goal in our Declaration of Independence and considered an unalienable right for all citizens  — “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”.  However, I disagree with the idea of chasing after it.

Happiness is like a butterfly; the more you chase it, the more it will elude you, but if you turn your attention to other things, it will come and sit softly on your shoulder. ~Thoreau

I believe that you can be happy no matter what your circumstances are in life, whether you’re rich or poor.  Some may still think that buying stuff can make you happy, but it is short lived and usually ends up giving the opposite effect because it’s like any other addictive behavior, like alcohol where you end up needing more and more to feel good.  A recipe for disasterous debt if you’re a shopaholic.  Ultimately, money can’t buy true happiness, in fact research has shown that many of the happiest people live in third world countries like Bali and are lucky if they have the basic necessities to stay alive, yet they are quite content and often smiling.

Happiness is a choice you make in any given moment.  What keeps us from dancing in the streets and singing in the rain?  A hint of silliness is good for the soul and makes you smile from ear to ear.  I love to croon and whirl about , but I haven’t seen many others display such delight on a day to day basis.  Sometimes my partner joins in but only if I drag him.  He’s a Virgo and a Minister’s son as well as a lifelong Mainer and can be quite reticent.  I’m from New Jersey so I guess I don’t have that issue.  At the risk of over generalizing, a jersey girl’s attitude is quite different from a typical New Englander, we are less inhibited and much more demonstrative.  Of course that doesn’t mean we don’t have our fair share of neuroses, I would say anger is our greatest block to happiness.  Many people from New York and New Jersey definitely have that challenge.  It’s like we were born with a chip on our shoulder and we dare everyone we meet to knock it off.  Thankfully I’m a recovering Jersey-ite and I’ve learned to temper my bad temper.

The majority of people seem to have some degree of blockage towards experiencing regular states of happiness.  How do I know that?  Look around you, how many shiny, happy people do you see?  (I don’t mean alcohol induced either.)  I hope for your sake I’m wrong and that you know many joyful individuals.  Fire signs (Leo, Sagitarrius and Aries) tend to be more enthusiastic and exuberant, it is their journey to learn how to enjoy life and overall they do a pretty good job at it.  However the water signs (Cancer, Pisces and Scorpio) need to work at it, they can get quite depressed if they let their emotions rule them.  Here’s a telling quote by Oscar Wilde, “Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go”.  We all can benefit from that wisdom.  I’d prefer to elicit the former response.  My friend had a great plaque over the sink in his kitchen that said “The key to a happy marriage is a bad memory”.  I thought that was very funny.  While Lord Tennyson said, “The happiness of a man in this life does not consist in the absence but in the mastery of his passions”.  Self control, imagine how great life would become if we stopped taking our bad moods out on each other.

Why does it feel so hard to be happy these days?  I don’t want to point fingers but I will anyway, could it be that we’ve been conditioned to become lifeless and staid, by being beaten down with depressing news programs on the television and programmed through advertisements to be dissatisfied with ourselves?  It’s like life has dulled in some way and we are the by product — welcome to zombie land.  Also, this may be my individual gripe, but who decided that women should be a size 0?  The fashion industry?  They probably just want to spend less money on fabric (smirk).  What a racket they have going with pills, diet foods and plastic surgery.  The weightloss industry is Big Business.  However, Marilyn Monroe was considered the most beautiful woman on the planet and I think she was a size 12.  So I’m done feeling bad about being a size 10, my new mantra is “Thank you, my beautiful, healthy and strong body, I love you!”

So the question becomes how can we increase our happiness?  We can start simply by returning to our original way of being, when we were innocent little children, before we began to identify with roles and labels.  Begin to like yourself exactly as you are and remove all the external pressures to be different.  I was just saying last night that I don’t think I’m ever going to change the awkwardness I feel going to social gatherings, I’ve tried to overcome it, but it stays with me year after year.  However, when I gave myself permission to be me, accepted my uncomfortable nervousness, I ended up feeling better and had a really good time that night.  Acceptance is key.  “Know Thyself.”  I have Aquarius Rising and Aquarius people tend to suffer from nervousness.  Air signs (Gemini, Libra and Aquarius) can wear themselves out with overthinking and need time alone to recuperate.

Our level of happiness depends on our ability to think positively.  Don’t be a prisoner of your own mind.  We must learn to live more from our heart than our head; make our mind serve us with loving intentions.  Find that place within ourselves that doesn’t judge or criticize and revel in that feeling of bliss which can be found when we’re not mentally beating ourselves up.  Look in the mirror and like who we see.  It’s also important to have things to look forward to in your life, don’t be stagnant, allow yourself to hope and dream.  There have been studies done connecting happiness with an extended life span. I read somewhere that the body starts to break down and die if we stop feeling like life is worth living — by dimming our Light and draining our lifeforce energy.  Therefore, it is vital to embrace life for better health and longevity — and happiness is a good way to start.  Like the renowned Bobby McFerrin ditty from the 80’s, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”, it’s great advice and a good song too.

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try again.

I don’t give up easily.  I’m a Capricorn which is known as the mountain goat who is constantly climbing to get to the top, and if I fall down, I just pick myself up and begin my ascent once more.  Instead of dusting myself off, I take a nice, long hot bath.  All the cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn) are relentless achievers and will stop at nothing to realize their goals.  Personally I think this is a trait we can use more of in this country.  People who will persist for a worthy goal.  Don’t just accept the status quo, especially if it goes against your morals, principals and well being.

I read the other day that the people of Blue Hill, Maine succeeded in passing a law that allows them to retain their rights for the sale of local agriculture, like raw milk and organic eggs.  It’s called the food freedom ordinance declaring sovereignty from government intrusion.  Good for them!  Hopefully, Farmington and the surrounding areas will be next.  I don’t want GMO’s in my food.

The Jehovah Witnesses know the meaning of struggling on with determination.  I don’t agree with their mission but I admire their tenacity.  We need more people willing to go door to door for progress and change.  We just watched the movie Erin Brockovich last night where she went to every sick person’s house in a California town to get them to sign the petition in a landmark case against PG&E, something like 600 people and they were rewarded over $300 million due to toxic waste poisoning.  PG&E stopped using that harmful chemical as well.  Her persistence certainly paid off!  Now she’s investigating the mysterious illnesses in upstate New York, I’m sure she’ll get to the bottom of it.

I’m more of the reclusive type, so I choose to facilitate changes through my writing, but I’m sure there are many willing to speak up for their rights in other productive ways like handing out flyers at the supermarket or ringing people’s doorbells and writing letters to Congress.  Maybe they just need encouragement to go out and make their voices heard.  After all, we are the home of the brave and land of the free — well at least that’s what our founding fathers intended from the get go.  Maybe we need to re-read our Constitution and Bill of Rights.  It’s time to get serious about what we want.  Do we want to continue on the course we’re on with TSA invading our privacy at the airports and governments deciding what’s best for us or do we want to have personal freedom to live our lives as we see fit?  I like the New Hampshire license plates that say, Live Free or Die.  Braveheart is one of my favorite movies.  William Wallace’s last cry for FREEDOM really inspired me.

This may conjure up some fear because we’ve been conditioned in our society these days to panic and worry under even normal circumstances with the threat of terrorist attacks, biological weapons and nuclear meltdowns.  Our quality of life has been compromised by endless wars, corporate greed and things like chemtrails.  Our rights are dwindling down with the most recent passing of a law that states we don’t even have a right for a trial by jury, it’s called the indefinite detention bill.

If we want to have our freedom back we need to persevere to remove all unnecessary fears from our life, like the fear of authority.  F.E.A.R. — stands for false evidence appearing real.  Fear is crippling.  A famous quote made by FDR was The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.    I heard it be said that to make it beyond 2012 we will need to overcome every fearful thought.  That the energies will shift after December 21, 2012 to zero point and it will be very easy to create whatever you think about.  No lag time.  Time and space will alter to the point of convergence and our thoughts will formulate instantaneously.  I don’t know about you, but I shudder to imagine what that will look like for those who think about dark things like zombies and evil aliens.  In these remaining months it is essential to take an inventory of our thoughts and emotions to see what needs to be weeded out of our consciousness.

Our subconscious mind reveals itself when we sleep through our dreams.  Are you having nightmares?  What makes you really scared, it’s time to overcome your fears.  If the dark is unbearable for you, like me — we need to go to bed with all the lights off and face the boogeyman.  If the thought of poverty puts you in a state of panic, you have to give more money away.  If you fear death, then you have to surround yourself with dying people — volunteer at a hospice and help people transition to the other side.  I’ve heard it can be a mystical experience to see the soul leave the body.

No matter what fear or desire you wish to work on it is essential to be optimistic to succeed.  Success usually doesn’t come without a lot of failed attempts.  Where would we be if Thomas Edison gave up?  We’d still be lighting candles and lanterns.  It took him a very long time to invent the light bulb.  Determination is a critical factor.

There are so many things we can improve upon:  better health, relationships, career, anything that we believe is crucial to the quality of our life.  Listen to your heart when it comes to what you want to create in your life now.  If you hate your job, find a way to change it.  Learn a new skill, take a class to better yourself.  Do something you love.  If your health is poor, start the healing process.  When we’re sick we’ll do almost anything to get well again — pain is a great motivator.  Don’t be satisfied with taking a pill to mask the symptoms temporarily.  Research natural remedies online.  Traditional medicine may actually be causing more sickness than wellness.  Studies have shown that prescription drugs are one of the #1 killers, after heart disease and cancer.  Good quality food is the best medicine.  We are what we eat.  Instead of eating out all of the time and frequenting fast food establishments, go food shopping, buy organic fruits and vegetables — cook nutritious meals at home.  It’s economical and healthier.  The internet is filled with healthy recipes.

Start exercising, I know it’s cold out and not the best conditions right now for walking outdoors, but UMF has an excellent recreational facility with an indoor track, pool, exercise equipment and many classes to get your body in shape.  Exercise is good for the soul as well as the body.  If you don’t have any spare money to join a gym, just do more exercise at home, push ups and sit ups are probably the best tried-and-true work out you can do for your body.  You can get exercise dvd’s and follow along at home.  It’s important to learn proper technique though so you don’t hurt yourself and always warm up with stretching.  Set aside an hour in your day to take care of your body.  You’ll be grateful you did, when your health improves and you have more energy.

How about your house, is it filled with clutter?  Don’t wait until springtime, according to feng shui experts, there are many benefits from clearing your space.  De-clutter now.  Go through all your stuff.  My motto is if I haven’t used it in a few years, it goes to charity.  If you need the money, sell it on craigslist.  Imagine how much more space you’d have if you got rid of the clutter.  I use a three bin system:  keep, donate and trash.

Finally, we can persevere for love.   If you are in a relationship, allow it to be used for self development as well as enjoying the romance and companionship.  Conflict can teach us a lot about ourselves.  Don’t just take the easy way out by leaving.  However, domestic violence should not be tolerated.  So, unless your safety is at risk, I think it’s best to stick it out.  I’m not saying to force someone to stay with you, that would be like Kathy Bates in Misery.  Just do your part and don’t quit.  Communication is key.  What I have learned is that men want to feel respected and women want to feel cherished.  It’s really not that hard to do once we know that secret……why not have a love that lasts forever?
